4/6 PERSON CAMPING TENT

The goal when designing this tent was to develop and produce a comfortable experience for both seasoned campers and newbies. I conducted research, designed, developed and executed this tent to be a flagship item for the Quest tent line, and successful market solution for Dick’s Sporting Goods. During development, a series of innovative design solutions were proposed to enhance the camping experience for all campers to feel informed and safe. Key design features that I incorporated include, improved ventilation to regulate temperature and minimize condensation, a full rainfly design with “patio” vestibule that offers expanded storage solutions and creating a better carry bag that doesn’t make you want to tear your hair out upon packing up.

proJECT goals

airflow, space and packability

When designing these tents, my primary goals were to enhance airflow, maximize space, and improve packability. I aimed to design a tent that allows for optimal ventilation, ensuring a comfortable environment regardless of weather conditions. The design prioritizes spacious interiors, allowing users to move freely and store their gear without feeling cramped. Additionally, I focused on packability, ensuring that the tents are lightweight and compact, making them easy to transport and set up for any outdoor adventure.

qualitative research

user needs and concerns

Data was gathered through qualitative user research for camp tents using several key methods. Field observations were integral to the research. Campers on trips, observing how they set up, used, and interacted with their tents in real environments.

[ventilation]

“Proper airflow within tents and shelters helps regulate temperature, ensuring that the interior remains comfortable regardless of external weather conditions.

emily

[packability]

“Packing a tent into its storage bag can quickly shift to frustration as you face the challenge of fitting the tent back into a comparatively small bag. Probably the worst part of camping!”

kevin

[space]

“Overall, extra storage solutions within a tent are vital for maintaining organization, protection, and comfort, ultimately improving the camping experience. I need plenty of room inside for all my gear and air mattress!”

fabric/material testing

properties and selection

Selecting the right taffeta involves a careful evaluation of various factors, including water beading, weight, and pricing. When choosing the taffeta for this new line of tents, I prioritized water-resistant properties, as our previous line of tents were criticized for allowing water to seep in through the material. Ensuring that the fabric could repel moisture effectively and maintain its integrity over time, ultimately, I selected a taffeta 68D 190T PU/FR/WR 1200mm, that struck a balance between water resistance and weight. Pricing also played a role; I aimed for a high-quality option that fit within budget constraints without compromising on the overall performance.

[water repellency]

Our material specialist testing various taffetas for water repellency. By evaluating the performance of these materials, we aim to ensure that campers can store their gear and air mattresses without worrying about moisture.

[seam tape]

Identifying critical areas where our current tents were taking in water was an essential step in enhancing their performance. We pinpointed specific seams and fabric junctions that were vulnerable to leakage.

[water beading]

Our material specialist conducted tests on various mesh types to evaluate their effectiveness in water beading and repellency.

[flooring]

Tent flooring is vital for outdoor shelters, preventing water intrusion and providing breathability.

concept ideation

rapid sketch conceptualization

Inspired by cultural communal spaces that promote connection, collaboration and togetherness. Open air environment for shared experiences, practical gear storage, and balancing functionality with community. As ideas emerged from research and field observations, they were quickly sketched and refined, leading to innovative design concepts that address the practical needs of campers in the field. This rapid ideation process fostered a deeper understanding of practical tent usability and enhanced the overall user experience.

Our previous tent bag design wasnt great…

Once the tent was out, it was near impossible to pack up due to the small opening. Regardless of how tightly you folded the tent, the space of the bag was inadequate to fit the full tent.

packing out

no fuss, no frustration

Our old tent bag flat out stinks, once the tent was out, it was near impossible to pack up. Packing our tents in the custom rolltop bag i designed is a straightforward process that emphasizes efficiency and convenience. The rolltop feature allows for easy access and secure closure, which simplifies packing.
